Basic Trauma Life Support was the first prehospital trauma course ever de-
veloped. In August of 1982, the first BTLS course for Paramedics & Advanced
EMS Providers began, as a local project of the Alabama Chapter of the Amer-
ican College of Emergency Physicians. Realizing the need for similar trauma
training for Basic EMT's, BTLS for Basic EMT's & 1st Responders was offered
in 1988. The original BTLS course was modeled after the course for physic-
ians, called Advanced Trauma Life Support, so that we would all be thinking
along the same lines, acting as a team.
If you wish to arrange for a BTLS course in your area, but do not know how
to contact your local Chapter Coordinator, you can write or call:

THIS PROGRAM:
This program is a computer study guide, consisting of 500 questions, 250 of
them taken from the Basic BTLS text, and 250 from the Advanced BTLS text. I
have done my best, and am confident that I have succeeded in developing the
most comprehensive computer study program that you will find, with each of
the 500 questions referenced to the appropriate text pages, and with an ex-
planation provided. As you go along, you will know if your answer was right
or wrong and, if wrong, you will be told the correct answer was and, in any
event, you will have the option of reading an explanation as to why the an-
swer is what it was. Once completed, you will be given the option of ending
the test & having your percentage grade displayed, or you may choose to re-
peat those questions that you had missed. This immediate and ongoing feed-
back will serve as an excellent preparation for the BTLS written exam. You
won't find anything better, except for the text and the course itself. Cer-
tainly, this program is not intended to replace either the textbook, or the
course itself, but it will enhance your learning experience.
It is unlikely that you will find the same questions within this program as
you will see on the written BTLS examination, as the purpose of this progr-
am is to enrich your learning experience, not necessarily to make it easier
for you. If similar questions exist, it is purely a matter of coincidence.
Neither this computer software program, KA_Soft, or the author, is affilia-
ted with Basic Trauma Life Support International, Inc.
Nor is this computer software program a publication of Brady Publishing, or
Prentice Hall, the publishers of the following texts, which were used as a
reference, and which are the primary textbooks used in BTLS:
B-BTLS .. BTLS: Basic Trauma Life Support for the EMT-B and First Responder
Second Edition - By John Emory Campbell M.D., F.A.C.E.P., and
Basic Trauma Life Support International, Inc.
A-BTLS .. Basic Trauma Life Support for Paramedics & Advanced EMS Providers
Third Edition - By John Emory Campbell M.D., F.A.C.E.P., and
Basic Trauma Life Support International, Inc.
Both texts published by Brady Publishing,
a division of Prentice Hall.
These texts were used as a primary reference for the questions used in this
computer tutorial, although other references were consulted for some of the
explanatory material.
THE AUTHOR:
I have been an EMS provider since 1983, a paramedic for most of that time.
I have served in most every area of emergency medical services: as a Basic,
Intermediate, and Paramedic Emergency Medical Technician, Dispatcher, Field
Training Officer, Instructor, Coordinator, and EMS Director .. although not
necessarily in that order. I have been an Instructor for three college EMS
programs, Program Chairman for two. And for the past several months, I've
been working once again as a field Paramedic, my choice, after resigning my
position as Program Chairman of a local State College EMS Program, in order
to be able to go back out into the real world, in part, and also to be able
to have more time to work on these computer tutorials. I've been a BTLS in-
structor for several years, and remember my first BTLS course as being one
of the most challenging and rewarding experiences in my EMS career.
